ATP Groening 2010, Butlins Minehead: day 3
So here ends another All Tomorrow’s Parties. My overall impression on leaving is of a very strong lineup. There were some absolutely superb performances: Boredoms performance of Boadrum being my absolute highlight.
Fitting therefore that the last day of the festival started with a second Boredoms performance. Just as astounding an experience second time around, and with the benefit of no hangover!
Probably my close second favourite set was the beautiful, dark and twisted performance by The Tiger Lillies. I’ve heard little bits of their music before, but the live show, complete with stage makeup and fantastic showmanship was truly brilliant.
Daniel Johnston gave one of the most heartbreakingly vulnerable performances I’ve ever seen. His songs are little works of sweet naïve genius, and as he stood amongst Spiritualized’s equipment he struck a forlorn figure. The crowd loved him, cheering each faltering tune and responding to his query “are you with me so far?” with a definitive “yes”. Uplifting.
The big ticket tonight was a two hour performance of Spiritualized’s tour de force Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space. A more complete contrast from Daniel Johnston could not be imagined. Where there was frailty and humility, let there be bombast! Kind of wonderful, in an entirely over the top way. I know the album very well (and heartily recommend it), and approached the performance with a little trepidation: I’m not usually very keen on the “x performs y” format; I’d rather see a band perform something which surprises me. That said, it was a great set, if a little (OK, a lot) overindulgent at times.
The final show that I saw before heading home was Joanna Newsom: sadly, only the first two songs before having to head home (especially having queued for half an hour or more to get into the venue) but she and her band were sounding excellent. I know she’s not to everyone’s taste, but I like her.
I am now slowly coming down to earth from a great weekend: Iggy, Boredoms, The Tiger Lillies. A wonderful and varied programme, difficult to top. Over and out.
