Tinie Tempah: Disc-Overy
The word “bombast” is definitely somewhere in Mr Tempah’s mission statement. In heavy black marker pen and underlined. Might be the entire mission statement. Fantastically energetic noise.
In complete contrast with Ghostpoet’s nuanced delivery, this is all about crowd pleasing big choons. That said, it’s done with a huge degree of intelligence and a real ear for a hook. Nice slabs of bassline underpin the whole deal nicely, especially on Pass Out. Overall, however, it feels like there’s nothing really novel here - it’s a relatively well trodden path (Dizzee Rascal, et al), and I can’t escape the feeling that I’m in a game soundtrack. He did well at the Brits, which makes sense, as it’s a very commercial album - more so than others on offer here. Liked it, but didn’t love it…
