Katy B: On a Mission

It’s 1991! Well, certainly that’s what On A Mission’s dubstep sounds like to me. Pop, yet again, is eating itself. The music is well produced if not particularly ground-breaking, and she has a great voice that brings a soulful tinge to the bouncy rave backing.

It feels like her personality is the main attraction here, which is refreshing where female vocals have a tendency to be either harshly depersonalised or just an adornment to the producer’s vision of a track. It has much more depth and humanity than Disc-Overy - arguably its closest peer in this list - and I’ll probably be giving it another listen, although the latter end did end up in a bit of an extended funk-lite grind. I particularly liked Broken Record, which reminded me of Let Me Be Your Fantasy by Baby D, coincidentally reinforcing the feeling that this is a 20 year-old sound. Made by a 22 year-old.

She has not known a time when rave didn’t exist.

I’m officially depressed now.
